Meet the faces of GrandVision’s CSR Ambassador Community: Portugal

GrandVision Portugal

What motivated you to join the GrandVision CSR Ambassador community?
From a young age, I participated in several charitable institutions where I took responsibilities like taking orphans to the beach during the summer and picking up a child from an orphanage to give him or her a Christmas dinner and present with my family.

Because my brother and I are orphans ourselves, we decided three years ago to not give Christmas presents to our own children and nephews. Instead, we taught our children to share by taking them to an institution where we gave toys to children who need them more. Our sons love to share because they can see the happiness we bring to other children in need. Now my brother, our children and I all share a much more rewarding feeling of sharing what we have in excess to people in need. As you can imagine, this value of giving back to communities carries over to my role as a CSR ambassador.

What facets of CSR are currently highest priority for GrandVision Portugal?

During the pandemic, we focused on [Lisbon’s] homeless community, with whom we celebrated the 2020 World Sight Day with by giving them eye tests, free prescription glasses, food and hygiene kits. Additionally, we donated several computers to children who needed them for online classes [during the pandemic], and gave food baskets to people in need.

What CSR initiatives at GrandVision Portugal are you most proud of?

I am very proud of our mission trip to Mozambique in late 2019, where we spent 11 days on the field in severe heat and humidity to give 1,000 eye tests and offer 6,000 pairs of prescription glasses people in need. Furthermore, we donated all the optical care and testing equipment that we used during this mission to Lúrio University in the north of Mozambique, as well as several pairs of glasses frames, lenses and contact lenses to the Lúrio University optometry students. When the pandemic is over, we plan to give two student optometrists from Mozambique each one-month internships in our GrandVision Portugal stores.

I am also proud of our year-round glasses recycling campaign where customers bring us their old glasses to be cataloged and repurposed for other GrandVision Portugal CSR events.

What is your hope for the future of GrandVision?

I would love to see our involvement at GrandVision with more international campaigns in the eyecare field that aim to help developing countries.
